Turn wild imagination into playable games and real physical inventions!
Digital Pioneers — Advancers is designed for young coders ready for bigger creative challenges.
Students begin each project by planning game architecture—sketching user interfaces, win/loss conditions, and game mechanics before coding in MIT Scratch 3.0.
Kids engineer multi-level Scratch games with scoring and physics, build custom physical game controllers out of everyday objects using Makey Makey circuits, and program advanced LED matrix displays on robotics.
They explore Scratch AI extensions and environmental machine learning models.
- Hands-Off Logic & Game Architecture: Kids learn how commercial games are structured. They sketch level layouts, design scoring systems, and study how character speed, gravity, and collision boxes work before writing Scratch code.
- Advanced Game Design & Circuits: Students build multi-screen Scratch 3.0 games featuring custom sprites, variables, and sound effects. They connect Makey Makey circuits, turning playdough, tin foil, or fruit into physical game controllers.
- Robotics & AI Integration: Students code Sphero BOLT and Dash robots for light sensor challenges and matrix light art. In AI, they use Scratch Face Sensing extensions to control games with facial movements and explore Code.org's AI for Oceans.
- Twice-Yearly Parent Showcases: Students host an interactive "Parent Arcade" at mid-year and end-of-year showcases. Parents play their children's custom games while kids explain their code and circuit wiring.
- Added Value for Your Child: Develops inventive confidence, technical persistence, and an understanding of physical computing.
Practical Information
- Ages: 6–7
- Group size: up to 12 children
- Session Duration: 2 hours per weekly Sunday lesson.
- Prerequisites: Completion of Digital Pioneers Explorers or prior Scratch Jr experience.
- Technology Used: MIT Scratch 3.0, Makey Makey invention kits, Sphero BOLT, Dash, AI Scratch extensions.
- Class Structure: Hands-on studio environment with team innovation projects.
- Showcases: Includes mid-year and end-of-year parent presentation sessions.
